Synopsis

The story of modern Singapore can be told through its living heritage, essentially the many colourful 'ingredients' that make up this vibrant, cosmopolitan city-state. With the founding of modern Singapore by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, we review the many events, people, artefacts, legends and lifestyles pre- and post-1819 that contributed to make Singapore the unique city it is today.

About The Author

Kennie Ting is a distinguished author, historian, and photographer with a passion for port cities, Singapore heritage, Asian art, and architecture. He has served as the director of the Asian Civilisations Museum and the Peranakan Museum in Singapore, and was the group director of Museums at the National Heritage Board. Ting's recent book, The Great Port Cities of Asia: In History, takes readers on a journey through sixty port cities in Asia and two thousand years of maritime history. His work has been recognized with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by France in 2021.
